Understanding energy efficiency

Energy efficiency is just that – the efficiency with which the system uses energy to produce its effect. The concept of energy efficiency is emphasized any time a new climate control system is being considered. When considering the energy efficiency of your system, there are many ways to evaluate its quality. Understanding these ratings helps you to make a choice that is right for your home and your budget.

SEER

The Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio (SEER) is the measure by which the efficiency of a cooling system or heat pump is discovered. The higher the SEER, the more efficient the system. Though regulations now mandate all newly manufactured systems have a SEER of at least 13, we offer systems with ratings of up to 21.

AFUE

Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency (AFUE) is the rating used to express the amount of fuel that is used by your oil or gas furnace for the purpose of actually heating your home, and how much of it is wasted. Many of our furnace options have AFUE ratings of 98%.

HSPF

Heating Seasonal Performance Factor (HSPF) is the measurement of efficiency when a heating pump is being used in heat mode. Regulations require ratings of at least 7.7, but we offer pumps with ratings of up to 13.

COP

The Coefficient of Performance (COP) is another means of determining the efficiency of a heat pump when in heating mode. It is often used for geothermal heating systems.

EER

Energy Efficiency Rating (EER) is generally used to evaluate the efficiency of geothermal systems. As with other ratings, the higher the number, the more efficient the system.
